Source: Salon

Twitter has served as mobilizing tool for marginalized activists who have used the social media platform to amplify isolated stories of police brutality until a clear narrative of systemic injustice has become undeniable (the #blacklivesmatter movement certainly was most helpful).

Now, one former police officer has taken to Twitter to tell his side of the story.

Michael A. Wood is a retired detective in the Baltimore Police Department’s violent crime division and founder of the Police Leadership Association, a group that publishes educational handbooks meant to serve as the “single resource for career development for law enforcement officers and supervisors.” He began tweeting Wednesday about things he had “seen & participated in, in policing that is corrupt, intentional or not.”

A retired Baltimore cop is blowing the whistle on police brutality and misconduct he allegedly witnessed during his decade on the force.

Former Sgt. Michael A. Wood Jr. listed his disturbing allegations in a Twitter firestorm Wednesday but stopped short of naming names or providing dates and locations.

“So here we go,” the ex-detective and U.S. Marine, 35, wrote to his thousands of followers. “I’m going to start Tweeting the things I’ve seen & participated in, in policing that is corrupt, intentional or not.”

Apparently, Wood decided to tell his story after he “virtually begged local media to give [him] a voice.” Wood previously spoke out about his time in the force during a radio interview. A spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department confirmed to the Huffington Post that Wood was a former officer who retired last year.

Michael A. Wood, who is white and retired from the Baltimore Police as a sergeant in 2014, wrote an email. “I know you have heard stories in the past of things like brake checks, drop offs, bumpy roads, et cetera, so you know that has occurred,” he writes. “Nothing can realistically change the possibility of someone exhibiting the callous behavior of using that vehicle as a weapon against the helpless or to stomp a boot into the neck of someone who flees.”

Rough rides are a long tradition in Baltimore. In 1992 Kenneth B. Mumaw, a white man then in his 60s, was falsely arrested and banged up in the transport van. The arrest and rough ride were in retaliation. He sued and won a $100,000 settlement.
